The best time to witness the Great Migration is during the peak season from July to October. During these months, the herds are typically in the northern Serengeti near the Mara River, where dramatic river crossings occur. This is the most spectacular time to witness the migration, with millions of wildebeest and zebras crossing crocodile-infested waters. However, migration viewing can be excellent year-round as the herds move throughout the Serengeti ecosystem following the rains. For the best chances of seeing river crossings, we recommend booking between July and September.
While river crossings are not guaranteed, the chances are highest during the peak season (July-October) when the herds are concentrated in the northern Serengeti. On a 5-day safari, you have a 60-70% chance of witnessing at least one river crossing if you spend 2-3 days in the northern Serengeti during peak season. Our experienced guides monitor migration movements daily and position you in the best locations to maximize your chances. The crossings are unpredictable and can happen at any time, which adds to the excitement. Even without a river crossing, you'll see massive herds of wildebeest and zebras stretching to the horizon.
We provide comfortable mid-range lodges and tented camps strategically located near migration routes. Accommodations feature private rooms or tents with en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, comfortable beds with mosquito nets, and dining areas. Tented camps offer an authentic bush experience with canvas walls and essential amenities. Lodges have private bathrooms, hot water, and dining rooms. All accommodations are clean, safe, and well-maintained with friendly staff. Meals are freshly prepared and nutritious, with picnic lunches provided during game drives. This 5-day itinerary includes stays at three different properties.
This safari offers incredible wildlife viewing beyond the migration. Serengeti is home to lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, elephants, zebras, giraffes, hippos, and over 500 bird species. Ngorongoro Crater has the highest density of lions in Africa and is the best place to see the endangered black rhino, plus large herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles. Tarangire is famous for massive elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. You have excellent chances of seeing the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino) on this safari. Your expert guide will take you to the best viewing spots.
We use customized 4x4 safari vehicles (Toyota Land Cruisers) with pop-up roofs for excellent game viewing and photography. Groups typically have 4-6 people per vehicle, ensuring everyone gets a window seat with good viewing angles. Vehicles are equipped with charging ports for electronics, cool boxes for drinks, and two-way radios for communication between guides to share wildlife sightings. This group size allows for a social experience while still providing good wildlife viewing. Private vehicle upgrades are available at extra cost ($150-200 per vehicle per day) for those preferring exclusivity.
Recommended items include: neutral-colored clothing (khaki, olive, beige - avoid white and bright colors), layers for cool mornings/evenings (temperatures can drop to 10°C/50°F), comfortable walking shoes, sun hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent with DEET (30% or higher recommended), binoculars (essential for wildlife viewing), camera with extra batteries and memory cards, power bank (charging limited at camps), headlamp or flashlight, reusable water bottle, personal medications, toiletries, and a small daypack. Pack in a soft-sided duffel bag (not hard suitcases) for easier vehicle storage. Most lodges have laundry services.
Yes, this safari is family-friendly and suitable for children aged 5 and above. Many lodges offer family rooms, children's menus, and child-friendly activities. Game drives can be adjusted for shorter durations when needed. Children under 12 receive discounted rates (30-50% off). Please inform us of children's ages when booking so we can arrange appropriate accommodations and activities. Some lodges have minimum age restrictions (6+ years) for safety reasons. Our guides are experienced in entertaining children while educating them about wildlife.
Most international visitors require a visa to enter Tanzania. Visas can be obtained online through the official Tanzania eVisa system (recommended, processing takes 5-10 business days, apply at least 2 weeks before travel) or upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for most nationalities (cash payment only, USD - have exact amounts ready). Single entry tourist visas cost $50 USD for most nationalities ($100 for US citizens). Several countries are visa-exempt including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and some other African nations. Check current requirements based on your nationality before traveling. We recommend using the eVisa system to avoid queues at the airport.
Cancellations made 30+ days before departure receive a full refund minus a 10% processing fee. Cancellations made 15-29 days before departure receive a 50% refund. Cancellations made less than 14 days before departure receive no refund. We offer free date changes up to 14 days before departure, subject to availability and applicable park fee changes. Travel insurance covering trip cancellation, medical evacuation, and medical expenses is highly recommended (required for some nationalities). Since migration safaris require advance park bookings, refunds are based on our ability to fill your spot. We can provide travel insurance recommendations upon booking.
The peak migration season is July to October, which is also the busiest time. For the best chances of seeing river crossings, we recommend booking between July and September. October also offers excellent migration viewing as the herds begin to move south. Book at least 3-6 months in advance for peak season as accommodations fill up quickly. If you prefer fewer crowds, the shoulder months (June and November) still offer good migration viewing with more availability and lower prices. We operate this safari year-round with different migration viewing opportunities each season. Our guides will advise on the best locations based on current migration movements.
