Day 01: Marangu Gate (1,980m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Begin your Kilimanjaro adventure at Marangu Gate. After completing registration formalities, start your trek through the lush rainforest. Watch for colobus monkeys and various bird species. The well-maintained trail leads to Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop. After settling in, you can take a short walk to Maundi Crater for acclimatization and stunning views. Distance: 8km, Hiking time: 4-5 hours.

Day 02: Mandara Hut (2,700m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

After breakfast, continue through the final stretch of rainforest and enter the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation changes dramatically as you approach Horombo Hut. On clear days, enjoy magnificent views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Horombo Hut is a busy and lively place with trekkers both ascending and descending. Distance: 12km, Hiking time: 6-8 hours.

Day 03: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Trek through the alpine desert zone where vegetation becomes increasingly sparse. Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, reaching Kibo Hut by early afternoon. Rest and prepare for your midnight summit attempt. Early dinner and sleep are essential as you'll wake around 11:30 PM. Distance: 10km, Hiking time: 6-8 hours.

Day 04: Summit Day: Kibo Hut (4,700m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Begin your summit attempt around midnight. Zigzag up through heavy scree to Gilman's Point (5,685m) for sunrise. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue to Horombo Hut. This is the most challenging and longest day. Distance: 22km (6km ascent, 16km descent), Hiking time: 12-15 hours.

Day 05: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Marangu Gate (1,980m)

After breakfast, descend through the moorland to Mandara Hut for lunch. Continue descending through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificates and bid farewell to your mountain crew. Transfer back to your hotel for a well-deserved rest and celebration. Distance: 20km, Hiking time: 5-7 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Marangu Route is considered moderate to challenging. It is the easiest route on Kilimanjaro with hut accommodation, but still requires good physical fitness. The main challenge is the altitude, with a shorter acclimatization period on the 5-day itinerary. Previous hiking experience is recommended but not mandatory. We suggest training with cardio exercises and hiking with a weighted backpack for 3-6 months before your climb. Most healthy individuals with proper preparation can successfully complete this climb. The key is to follow the 'Pole Pole' (slowly slowly) approach and listen to your guide's advice.
The summit success rate for the 5-day Marangu Route with our experienced team is approximately 75-85%. The longer 6-7 day itineraries have higher success rates (85-90%) due to better acclimatization. However, with proper preparation, physical fitness, and following your guide's advice (especially the 'Pole Pole' slow pace and proper hydration), you have excellent chances of reaching Uhuru Peak. Our guides are trained to monitor altitude symptoms and will ensure your safety throughout the climb, making the final decision about summit attempts based on your condition. We provide comprehensive support including emergency oxygen and first aid.
Essential equipment includes: waterproof hiking boots (broken in), thermal base layers, fleece jacket, insulated down jacket, waterproof jacket and pants, warm gloves (including liner gloves), warm hat and buff, hiking pants, sleeping bag (rated -10°C or lower), headlamp with extra batteries, sunglasses with UV protection, daypack (30-40L), trekking poles, water bottles/bladder, sun hat, sunscreen, lip balm, and personal medications. Full equipment rental is available in Moshi if needed. A detailed packing list is provided upon booking, and we offer free equipment checks before your climb. We recommend bringing hiking socks and base layers that wick moisture away.
Prior climbing experience is not required, but previous hiking or trekking experience is highly recommended. You should be comfortable walking for 6-8 hours per day on steep terrain. The 5-day Marangu Route is suitable for first-time climbers who are physically fit and well-prepared. We recommend training with long hikes (6+ hours) on weekends and cardio exercises 3-4 times per week for at least 3 months before your climb. Stair climbing with a weighted backpack is excellent preparation for Kilimanjaro's terrain. Our guides provide comprehensive support and guidance throughout the trek.
Our package includes: Kilimanjaro National Park permits and fees, certified mountain guides (1 guide per 2 climbers), assistant guides, mountain hut accommodation on the mountain (4 nights), 3 full meals daily (prepared by our professional cooks), porters to carry group equipment, emergency oxygen and first aid kit, airport transfers (arrival and departure), and summit certificates upon success. We also provide pre-climb briefing and equipment checks in Moshi. Our team includes a ratio of approximately 1 porter per climber for group equipment. All meals are freshly prepared and nutritious, with dietary requirements accommodated upon request.
The best climbing seasons are: June to October (the main dry season with clear skies and stable weather) and January to March (warm and relatively dry with fewer crowds). December and April-May are the rainy seasons when trails can be wet and muddy, though some climbers prefer these times for fewer crowds and lush scenery. We recommend booking at least 3-6 months in advance for peak season climbs. All seasons offer unique advantages, and we operate climbs year-round with appropriate gear and support. Each season provides different views and experiences on the mountain.
Our guides use the 'Pole Pole' (Swahili for 'slowly slowly') approach - walking slowly to aid acclimatization. Other prevention methods include: staying well hydrated (3-4 liters daily), eating adequately despite reduced appetite, listening to your guide's advice, considering altitude medication (consult your doctor - we recommend Diamox), avoiding alcohol and caffeine, and not overexerting yourself on summit night. We also include an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut with a hike to Zebra Rocks. If you show severe altitude symptoms, we will assist you in descending safely. Our guides are trained in Wilderness First Responder and carry emergency oxygen.
We maintain a maximum ratio of 1 guide per 2 climbers (1:2) for safety and personalized attention. This is better than KPAP requirements and ensures you receive proper support, especially on summit night. Additionally, we provide assistant guides for larger groups. Our guides are all certified by Kilimanjaro National Park, have Wilderness First Responder training, speak excellent English, and have summited Kilimanjaro hundreds of times. This ratio is crucial for safety and monitoring each climber's condition, especially during the challenging summit night when individual support is essential.
The Marangu Route features mountain huts with sleeping bunks (no camping required). Mandara Hut (2,700m) has 60 bunks with separate sleeping areas, solar lighting, and flush toilets. Horombo Hut (3,720m) has 120 bunks, solar lighting, flush toilets, and a dining area. Kibo Hut (4,700m) has 60 bunks, basic facilities, and is the starting point for summit night. Mattresses are provided but you need a sleeping bag. This makes Marangu the most comfortable route on Kilimanjaro, with protection from weather and no tent setup required. The huts provide a social atmosphere where climbers can share experiences and advice.
Cancellations made 60+ days before departure receive a full refund minus a 10% processing fee. Cancellations made 30-59 days before departure receive a 50% refund. Cancellations made less than 30 days before departure receive no refund. We offer free date changes up to 30 days before departure, subject to availability. Travel insurance that covers trip cancellation and emergency evacuation is mandatory for all climbers. We can provide insurance recommendations upon booking. This policy protects our team's bookings and preparations, as we make significant advance arrangements with park fees and guide scheduling.
