Description

5 days kilimanjaro climb - umbwe route price from $ 1200 per person

The 5 Days Kilimanjaro Climb via Umbwe Route is the most direct and steepest path to Uhuru Peak, making it one of the most challenging but rewarding routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. This route is perfect for experienced hikers and adventure seekers looking for an intense climbing experience. The Umbwe Route offers spectacular views and a unique wilderness experience with fewer crowds compared to other routes.

Starting from Umbwe Gate through dense rainforest, the trail ascends steeply to Barranco Camp, then continues to Karanga Valley, Barafu Camp, and finally to the summit. While this route is shorter and more direct, it provides less time for acclimatization, requiring climbers to be well-prepared physically and mentally. The success rate is lower compared to longer routes, but the breathtaking scenery and sense of accomplishment make it an unforgettable Kilimanjaro trekking experience.

Day 01: Umbwe Gate (1,600m) to Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m)

Your journey begins at Umbwe Gate where you'll meet your climbing team. Trek through dense mountain rainforest on a steep, challenging trail. The path follows a forested ridge between two rivers, leading to Umbwe Cave Camp. Watch for black-and-white colobus monkeys and unique flora. Distance: 11km, Hiking time: 5-7 hours.

Day 02: Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m)

Continue ascending through increasingly sparse vegetation into the moorland zone. The trail steepens and offers spectacular views of the Southern Icefields. Reach Barranco Camp, situated in a valley below the imposing Barranco Wall, with stunning views of Kibo Peak. Distance: 6km, Hiking time: 4-6 hours.

Day 03: Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Karanga Camp (4,200m)

Begin with an exciting scramble up the Barranco Wall (not technical but steep). Cross several valleys and ridges as you traverse towards Karanga Valley. This shorter day helps with acclimatization and offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Distance: 5km, Hiking time: 4-5 hours.

Day 04: Karanga Camp (4,200m) to Barafu Camp (4,600m) and Summit Attempt

Morning trek to Barafu Camp on a steep trail through alpine desert. Rest and prepare for the summit attempt. Begin your summit climb around midnight, zigzagging up through heavy scree towards Stella Point (5,756m). Continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), Africa's highest point! After celebrating at the summit, descend to Barafu Camp. Distance: 4km up and 13km down, Hiking time: 6-8 hours ascent, 7-8 hours descent.

Day 05: Barafu Camp (4,600m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

After breakfast, descend through the moorland and rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificates and bid farewell to your mountain crew. Transfer back to your hotel for a well-deserved rest and celebration. Your incredible Kilimanjaro adventure via the challenging Umbwe Route is complete! Distance: 19km, Hiking time: 5-7 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Umbwe Route is considered the most challenging route on Kilimanjaro, rated as strenuous to very difficult. It features the steepest ascent and the most direct path to the summit, with very limited acclimatization time. This route is recommended for experienced hikers with excellent physical fitness. You should be comfortable with steep terrain, scree walking, and altitude. Previous high-altitude trekking experience is strongly recommended. The success rate is lower than other routes due to the challenging nature and lack of acclimatization time, but the sense of achievement is unparalleled. Only attempt this route if you are physically and mentally prepared for a serious challenge.
The summit success rate for the 5-day Umbwe Route is approximately 50-60%, significantly lower than longer routes (70-85%) due to the steep ascent and limited acclimatization. However, with proper preparation, physical fitness, and following your guide's advice (especially the 'Pole Pole' slow pace and proper hydration), you can improve your chances. Our experienced guides are trained to monitor altitude symptoms and will ensure your safety, making the final decision about summit attempts based on your condition. We recommend the 6-day Umbwe Route or other longer routes for better acclimatization if you're concerned about summit success.
Essential equipment includes: waterproof hiking boots (broken in), thermal base layers, fleece jacket, insulated down jacket, waterproof jacket and pants, warm gloves (including liner gloves), warm hat and buff, hiking pants, sleeping bag (rated -10°C or lower), headlamp with extra batteries, sunglasses with UV protection, daypack (30-40L), trekking poles, water bottles/bladder, sun hat, sunscreen, lip balm, and personal medications. Since this is a camping route, you'll also need a sleeping pad (we provide) and a duffel bag for your gear. Full equipment rental is available in Moshi if needed. A detailed packing list is provided upon booking, and we offer free equipment checks before your climb.
Yes, prior high-altitude trekking or climbing experience is strongly recommended for the Umbwe Route. You should have experience with steep, challenging terrain and be comfortable walking 6-8 hours per day with a daypack. Previous experience at altitudes above 4,000m is highly beneficial. The route involves scrambling sections, steep scree, and significant altitude gain in a short period. We recommend at least 3-6 months of specific training before attempting this route, including stair climbing with a weighted backpack, long hikes on weekends, and cardio exercises 4-5 times per week.
Our package includes: Kilimanjaro National Park permits and fees, certified mountain guides (1 guide per 2 climbers), assistant guides, camping equipment (tents, sleeping pads), 3 full meals daily (prepared by our professional cooks), porters to carry group equipment and your duffel bag (15kg limit), emergency oxygen and first aid kit, airport transfers (arrival and departure), and summit certificates upon success. We also provide pre-climb briefing and equipment checks in Moshi. Our team includes a ratio of approximately 2-3 porters per climber. All meals are freshly prepared and nutritious, with dietary requirements accommodated upon request.
The best climbing seasons are: June to October (the main dry season with clear skies and stable weather) and January to March (warm and relatively dry with fewer crowds). Given the challenging nature of the Umbwe Route, dry conditions are particularly important for safety and comfort on the steep, slippery sections. December and April-May are the rainy seasons when trails can be very muddy and dangerous on steep sections. We recommend booking at least 3-6 months in advance for peak season climbs. All seasons offer unique advantages, but safety is paramount on this challenging route.
Altitude prevention is critical on the Umbwe Route due to the rapid ascent. Our guides use the 'Pole Pole' (slowly slowly) approach and recommend: staying well hydrated (4-5 liters daily), eating adequately despite reduced appetite, listening to your guide's advice, considering altitude medication (consult your doctor - we recommend Diamox), avoiding alcohol and caffeine, and not overexerting yourself. Unlike other routes, there's no acclimatization day on the 5-day Umbwe itinerary, making proper hydration and pacing even more crucial. If you show severe altitude symptoms, we will assist you in descending safely. Our guides carry emergency oxygen and are trained in Wilderness First Responder.
We maintain a maximum ratio of 1 guide per 2 climbers (1:2) for safety and personalized attention on the challenging Umbwe Route. This is better than KPAP requirements and ensures you receive proper support, especially on summit night. Additionally, we provide assistant guides for larger groups. Our guides are all certified by Kilimanjaro National Park, have Wilderness First Responder training, speak excellent English, and have summited Kilimanjaro hundreds of times. Given the difficulty of this route, this low ratio is essential for safety and monitoring each climber's condition, especially during the challenging summit night.
The Umbwe Route is a camping route, using comfortable mountain tents throughout the trek. You'll stay at designated campsites with basic facilities: Umbwe Cave Camp (Day 1), Barranco Camp (Day 2), Karanga Camp (Day 3), and Barafu Camp (Day 4). Our team sets up the tents and provides sleeping pads, but you'll need your own sleeping bag. The camps have basic pit toilets and no running water. Our team prepares all meals in a mess tent, ensuring you have hot, nutritious food despite the challenging conditions. This is a true wilderness camping experience, with incredible views from each campsite location.
